IKEA Brooklyn | Studio Apartment Room Set | 290 sq ft

Here is my design for a 290 sq ft apartment room set relevant to the small space living urban market in NYC. I took a pre-planned solution for a bedroom designed by IKEA's central planning office and pulled from local research and personal experience living in Brooklyn to adapt the design to include some local architectural details and transform the space from bedroom-only to a multifunctional living space with a small kitchenette and built-in closet.

The design is for a hypothetical young couple who live a fast-paced city life, one freelancing from home.  They cook sparingly and dine out frequently, but like to retreat to their cozy space at the end of a hectic day and occasionally entertain friends or clients. A gate-leg table works as a compact side table or nightstand, but can be expanded as a dinner or conference table.  The daybed is another transformational piece.  Floor to ceiling wardrobes provide concealed storage and ceiling-mount curtains help define activity zones and create privacy.  I've outfitted the built-in closet with a modular storage system to work with its shape and added extra functionality to an entryway space.  The kitchen I designed for them is compact and supports only the basic functions needed for this lifestyle, with added pantry storage for household items.

For the installation of the room set, I created detail drawings of the millwork from which the contractors built out the wall divider and beams. I managed the construction process, coordinated the furniture installations, and led in the implementation of the home furnishing details.
